HR and Talent Manager/ess

This is a very senior role for the client,reporting directly to a Managing Partner

1.  Primary Location and hours

Accra – (hybrid working – 4 days in the office, 1-day remote working)

2. Role Overview/Scope

To manage and perform the operational and strategic HR activities of the firm including people management, employee engagement, and talent development.

  1. Key responsibilities

3.1 Operational activities

  • Developing a strategic HR plan with the Management Committee of the firm.
  • Performing routine HR functions including hiring of legal and non-legal roles, managing leave schedules, exit activities, disciplinary issues, reward and retention activities.
  • Assisting with onboarding and orientation of new hires and reorientation of employees who change roles or are reassigned to other activities.
  • Managing the performance appraisal process of the firm.
  • Enforcing company policies and procedures, including disciplinary processes.
  • Managing activities on the firms HR management software, BambooHR, including providing periodic reports.
  • Ensuring the firm’s compliance with statutory obligations relating to employment such as filing annual returns to the immigration service for foreign employees employed by the firm.
  • Reporting to the HR Subcommittee of the Management Committee on all employee related matters and implementing decisions from the Management Committee.
  • Performing any other administrative duties that the HR Subcommittee may assign

3.2 Transformational activities

  • Assisting with the development of a strategic plan to recruit, nurture, train and retain the right talent to achieve the firm’s vision.
  • Assisting with learning and development, talent management programs to achieve the firm’s vision and mission.
  • Assisting with the development of a comprehensive succession plan with the leadership of the firm.
  • Updating and reporting on best practices in HR management.
  • Proactively reviewing trends in remuneration, training, benefits and wellness initiatives and working with the HR Subcommittee to ensure the firm offers the kind of environment to attract and retain the best talent in the market.

  1. Required skills and competencies

4.1 Technical skills: excellent technical skills, including:

  • at least 5 years of demonstrable expertise in human resource and talent management;
  • the ability to identify, analyse and prioritise complex HR issues, and to solves complex HR problems while providing advice to the management committee that is clear, practical and easy to understand;
  • the ability to analyse and forecast the impact of HR and wellness issues on the business and to clearly articulate such impact for the management and aid the management committee to make data driven decisions;
  • the ability to draft reports clearly and in plain English with minimal input from senior colleagues, excellent presentation skills;
  • the ability to contribute to the intellectual capital of the firm by sharing expertise and collaborating with the firm’s management and executive committees;
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Teams and Sharepoint is a must. Knowledge of BambooHR and Microsoft Projects is a plus.
  • Excellent knowledge of employment laws, regulations, and best practices;
  • Ability to create and manage a budget; and
  • Excellent project management, administrative and organizational skills;

4.2 Communication skills: excellent written and oral communication skills, including:

  • the ability to communicate effectively, both internally with colleagues and with external stakeholders;
  • the ability to use clear, succinct and appropriate language to influence and advocate, negotiate, present information accurately and to deliver difficult and complex messages clearly and sensitively; and
  • the ability to produce written work that is well structured, contains appropriate detail without being unnecessarily complicated, and is accurate, grammatically correct and appropriate to its audience.

4.3 Firm culture and talent development: able to anticipate and respond to the needs of the staff to deliver exceptional service, whilst looking for opportunities to nurture and deepen relationships, including being:

  • responsive:
  • providing a prompt response to all telephone calls, e-mails and correspondence, as discussed further below;
  • respecting and meeting deadlines, at all times;
  • keeping clients informed of the progress on their matter; and
  • communicating effectively throughout a transaction.
  • commercial:
  • giving clear and practical advice that management and staff can understand and act upon; and
  • taking a pragmatic, solutions-oriented approach: not only identifying risks and issues, but providing solutions to the issues identified wherever possible; and
  • efficient:ensuring that advice is targeted, timely and cost-effective.

4.4 People and team: able to work effectively as part of a team, leading, coaching and developing staff and building relationships across the firm, including:

  • Ability to pre-empt and resolve conflicts quickly and to think strategically
  • Monitoring team performance and taking action to keep staff on track; and
  • providing ongoing feedback and appropriate guidance and working with individuals to identify areas for development and to set meaningful performance objectives.

4.5 Organisational skills: excellent project management and organisational skills, including

  • the ability to juggle a variety of demands, and to manage time effectively;
  • effective planning and prioritisation and the ability to monitor progress and keep track of deliverables;
  • keeping clear and accurate records; and
  • using IT/technology effectively
  • proactive, forward thinking and able to work independently.

4.6 Personal qualities: credible, professional, able to work with a wide range of clients and people, including:

  • acting with integrity, acting honestly and with integrity in all situations, exercising good judgement, maintaining strict confidentiality and always acting ethically and with professionalism;

 5. Other Requirements 

5.1 Experience

  • coaching and managing people;
  • managing administrative tasks with minimal supervision; and
  • ability to work with people from different generations, including young graduates/ millennials.

5.2 Qualifications

  • minimum 5+ years working experience in an HR field;
  • bachelor’s degree or higher in HR Management;
  • Evidence of continuing professional development activity (e.g. certificates in HR/Talent Management); and
  • other professional qualifications are a plus.

Salary

max 5000-8000 GHS net depending on your professional experience.
